In this essay I intend to discuss some of the arguments for and against banning motorists who drive too fast in residential areas. The question concerns both the protection of society and the way we respond when people break speed limits. My answer is that it depends on the circumstances.
The main argument for a ban is the need to protect people living in these areas. Laws should help create a safe society. Supporters could argue that holding motorists accountable shows that the rules matter and that other people’s rights deserve protection.
On the other hand, an argument against automatically banning every motorist is that a response should consider the individual case. Simply choosing the same outcome for everyone does not explain why that outcome is appropriate. We should discuss the circumstances rather than assume that one answer settles every case.
In my opinion, protecting society must remain the main concern, but the reasons for any proposed response should be clear. I therefore favour considering each case before deciding on a ban. This position recognises the arguments on both sides while keeping safety and individual rights at the centre of the discussion. Ultimately, a clear explanation is more convincing than a punishment proposed without supporting reasons.
