Unit 2 is called **Family celebrations**, and the opener page tells you the grammar you will study: **simple past and past perfect** [once / when / before / after / by the time], and **compound nouns**. The page shows four photographs of families together: a very large graduation photograph, a family eating a meal outdoors around a table, a family group photograph, and a family sitting in a park playground.(ص 21)
In the **Discuss** section, exercise 1 asks: who are the people in the photographs, and what do you think is happening? Model answers: in the first photograph the people are university students at their graduation ceremony, wearing gowns and caps; in the second, a family of three generations — grandparents, parents and children — are having a meal together in a garden; in the third, a large family are posing for a group photograph; in the fourth, a mother and her children are spending the afternoon in a playground.(ص 21)
Exercise 2 is a personal question with lines to write on: **when do members of your family meet with each other?** A model answer: my family meets every Friday after the prayer at my grandfather's house; we also meet on the two Eids, at weddings, when a relative comes back from a journey, and on graduation days. Write four or five lines and use time expressions: every Friday, twice a month, on special occasions, whenever someone travels.(ص 21)
Listen (2.1): three people talking about a recent family celebration(ص 22)
Exercise 3 tells you what to expect: **you are going to hear three people talking about a recent family celebration**, and it asks two general questions before the details: (a) What occasions are the three speakers describing? (b) Who do you think the three speakers are? The first time you listen, do not try to catch everything. Just find the occasion (a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, a graduation) and the person speaking (a sister, a father, a friend).(ص 22)
Check your understanding: eight detailed questions(ص 22)
- Exercise 4 — listen again and answer these questions:
- Speaker 1 — a Is the speaker's brother older or younger than she is? What is the age difference?
- Speaker 1 — b Where was the celebration held?
- Speaker 1 — c Do you think this venue was the best location for the party? Why?
- Speaker 2 — d Which three activities do the speaker and his family enjoy doing together?
- Speaker 2 — e How many members of the speaker's family get together on Friday evenings?
- Speaker 2 — f Why is food an important part of a celebration?
- Speaker 3 — g What did the old school friend say when he saw the speaker?
- Speaker 3 — h Why is the occasion a personal milestone?
Vocabulary: sign, swap, host, make(ص 22)
Exercise 5 gives you four verbs — **sign, swap, host, make** — and asks you to complete four sentences with the correct form. Learn them with the words they go with: you **host** a party or a celebration (you are the person who invites and organises); you **swap** places or seats (you exchange them); you **make** a speech (not 'do a speech'); and you **sign** a card (you write your name on it).(ص 22)
- Exercise 5 with the answers:
- a We decided to host a special celebration for our brother. (after 'to' we keep the base form)
- b If you want to talk to everyone, you have to swap places from time to time. (after 'have to' we keep the base form)
- c The man's eldest son made a short speech before the celebration. (past simple, because the celebration is finished)
- d Everyone signed a card to wish the couple a happy anniversary. (past simple)
Think and speak: describing a family celebration(ص 22)
In exercise 6a you take turns with a partner to describe a family celebration you remember well, and the book gives you four points to think about: **the place**, **the people**, **food and drink**, and **people's clothes**. These four points are your plan, so give each one at least two sentences. A model opening: 'The celebration I remember best was my cousin's graduation party. It was held in a hall near our house…'(ص 22)
Exercise 6b asks: do you think it is important for the members of families to meet on important occasions? Give reasons. A model answer: yes, it is very important. Meeting keeps the family close-knit, so children learn to know their relatives. It gives older members the feeling that they are not forgotten. It is also the time when families share news, solve problems and remember the people who are far away.(ص 22)

Discuss — Exercise 1Look at the photographs and discuss these questions. a Who are the people in the photographs? b What do you think is happening?(ص 21)
a and b (guided answers): In the large photograph the people are university students at their graduation ceremony, wearing gowns and caps. In the garden photograph a family of three generations — grandparents, parents and children — are having a meal together. In the small group photograph a large family are posing for a family photograph. In the last photograph a mother and her children are spending the afternoon in a playground. Note: the question says 'what do you think', so use the language of guessing: they look like…, I think they are…, it seems to be…
Discuss — Exercise 2When do members of your family meet with each other? (write on the lines)(ص 21)
Personal answer. Model: My family meets every Friday after the prayer at my grandfather's house, where we have lunch together. We also get together on the two Eids and at weddings, and our relatives visit whenever someone returns from a journey. Last month we held a get-together for my cousin's graduation, and these meetings keep our family close-knit. Note: write four or five lines and use time expressions such as every Friday, on the two Eids, whenever…
Listen — Exercise 3 (recording 2.1)You are going to hear three people talking about a recent family celebration. a What occasions are the three speakers describing? b Who do you think the three speakers are?(ص 22)
Method: on the first listening do not try to catch the details. Listen only for two things: the name of the occasion (a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, a graduation) and the relationship of the speaker to the family (a sister, a father, a friend). Write one or two words for each speaker. Note: the exact occasions and speakers come from recording (2.1); question b begins with 'Who do you think', so it accepts a reasoned guess supported by what you hear (for example, 'a sister, because she talks about her brother').
Check your understanding — Exercise 4 (recording 2.1)Listen again and answer these questions. Speaker 1: a Is the speaker's brother older or younger than she is? What is the age difference? b Where was the celebration held? c Do you think this venue was the best location for the party? Why? Speaker 2: d Which three activities do the speaker and his family enjoy doing together? e How many members of the speaker's family get together on Friday evenings? f Why is food an important part of a celebration? Speaker 3: g What did the old school friend say when he saw the speaker? h Why is the occasion a personal milestone?(ص 22)
Questions a, b, d, e and g are answered from the recording: write the speaker's own words (the age difference in years, the name of the venue, the three activities, the number of relatives, and the friend's exact sentence). Questions c and f ask for your opinion with a reason. Model answer for c: Yes, I think it was a good venue because it was large enough for all the guests and close to the family's houses; or: No, because it was too far and there was not enough parking. Model answer for f: Food is important because sharing a meal brings people together, it shows generosity to the guests, and traditional dishes remind the family of its own culture. Question h asks you to explain 'milestone': an important event that marks a stage in a person's life, such as a graduation, a first job or a wedding, so the occasion is personal because it marks a new stage in the speaker's own life. Note: the recording (2.1) is needed for the factual questions, so listen twice and write short, complete answers.
Vocabulary — Exercise 5 (sign / swap / host / make)Complete these sentences with the correct form of one of these verbs: sign, swap, host, make. a We decided to ...... a special celebration for our brother. b If you want to talk to everyone, you have to ...... places from time to time. c The man's eldest son ...... a short speech before the celebration. d Everyone ...... a card to wish the couple a happy anniversary.(ص 22)
a host b swap c made d signed. Note: after 'to' in (a) and after 'have to' in (b) the verb keeps its base form; sentences (c) and (d) describe finished events, so they take the past simple. Learn the pairs: host a celebration, swap places, make a speech, sign a card.
Think and speak — Exercise 6Work with a partner. a Take turns to describe a family celebration you remember well. Think about: the place, the people, food and drink, people's clothes. b Do you think it is important for the members of families to meet on important occasions? Give reasons.(ص 22)
a Model description: The celebration I remember best was my cousin's graduation party. It was held in a hall near our house, decorated with lights and flowers. About sixty people came: my grandparents, my uncles and aunts and many university friends. There was a long table with machboos, grilled meat, salads and a large cake, and we drank karak tea and fresh juice. Most of the men wore the traditional dishdasha, and my cousin wore a formal black gown for the photographs. b Model answer: Yes, it is important. Meeting keeps the family close-knit and helps children to know their relatives. It makes older members feel that they are not forgotten. It is also the time when the family shares news, solves problems and remembers those who are far away. As the quote on this page says, the greatest happinesses are family happinesses. Note: in part (a) give each of the four points at least two sentences; in part (b) the book asks for reasons, so give at least three.
