Speaking: Discussing religious occasions20)

This page moves from public festivals to **religious occasions**. In exercise 1 you listen to recording (1.3), a description of the **Hajj**, and your task is to **make a list of any phrases the speaker uses to describe his personal experience**. So you are not listening for facts about the Hajj; you are listening for the speaker's own feelings and impressions.20)

انتبه
How do you recognise a phrase about **personal experience**? It usually starts with 'I' and contains a feeling, a memory or a comparison: 'I felt…', 'I had never seen…', 'I will never forget…', 'It was the mostI have ever…', 'I did not expect…', 'It reminded me of…'. Write each phrase in your list exactly as the speaker says it, in the first person.20)

The photograph on the page shows the Holy Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Makkah, with a very large number of pilgrims around it. Look at it before you listen, because a picture prepares the vocabulary you will need: pilgrims, crowd, white clothing, circling the Kaaba, praying together.20)

Think and speak: three questions about the recording20)

Exercise 2 asks you to work in pairs and answer three questions: (a) Why is the Hajj important? (b) Did the speaker predict what his experience would be like? (c) What does the speaker describe as 'a sea of white cloth'? Question (a) is about general knowledge, question (b) is about the speaker's expectations, and question (c) is about an image, that is, a picture made with words.20)

For question (a): the Hajj is important because it is one of the five pillars of Islam and a duty on every Muslim who is able to perform it, once in a lifetime. It also brings Muslims from every country together in one place, wearing the same simple clothes, so it is a great lesson in equality, patience and brotherhood. That is why the speaker describes it as the experience of a lifetime.20)

For question (b) you must listen for the language of expectation. If the speaker says something like 'I thought it would be…' and then 'but in fact…', the answer is that he did predict, but reality was different. If he says 'I never imagined…' or 'nothing prepared me for…', the answer is that he did not predict it at all. Write down the exact sentence you hear as your evidence.20)

For question (c), 'a sea of white cloth' is a **metaphor**: the speaker is describing the huge crowd of pilgrims, because they all wear the simple white clothing of ihram, so from far away the crowd looks like a wide white sea moving together. Explain the image in your own words, and say why it is a good description: it gives you the colour, the size and the movement all in three words.20)

Speaking task: the returning pilgrim and the future pilgrim20)

In exercise 3 you work in pairs: one of you has just returned from the Hajj, and the other is preparing for his journey next year. You share your preparations and experiences with each other, and the book adds one condition: **make sure to include some personal descriptions**. Useful language for the returning pilgrim: 'The moment I saw…', 'I will never forget…', 'What surprised me most was…'. Useful language for the future pilgrim: 'What should I take with me?', 'How long did you stay in…?', 'Were you able to…?'.20)

Write: invent a festival for your area20)

Exercise 4 is the writing task. In pairs you **invent a festival or community celebration for your area**. It should reflect your area's culture and history and celebrate something that has happened there. Then the work is divided: one of you writes a **report** about it, including the preparation, the event itself, and the period after the festival; the other writes from the **point of view of a visitor**, outlining where it was successful and where it was not. Finally you present your report to the class.20)

  1. The 'Weaving Festival' timetable in the book, which you use as a starting-point:
  2. 23 JANUARY: Book venue for 'Weaving Festival'
  3. 12 FEBRUARY: Order weaving materials
  4. 26 FEBRUARY: Make posters to advertise the festival
  5. 12 MARCH: Hire tables and chairs for the venue
  6. 13 MARCH: Install the weaving exhibition
  7. 14 MARCH: Hire local musicians to provide entertainment
  8. 20 MARCH: Confirm all bookings
  9. 21 MARCH: Prepare the venue; get materials ready
  10. 2326 MARCH: THE FESTIVAL
  11. 27 MARCH: Clean the venue; thank the musicians; take down the weaving exhibition
انتبه
Notice how the timetable divides the work into the three parts the report needs: **before** (booking the venue, ordering materials, posters, hiring tables and musicians, confirming bookings, preparing the venue), **during** (2326 March, the festival itself), and **after** (cleaning the venue, thanking the musicians, taking down the exhibition). Use the same three parts as the three paragraphs of your report, and use past tenses and dates to keep the order clear.20)

Words to remember20)

انتبه
The box on this page lists nine words: bubbly, chain, commemorate, embark, exuberant, fanciful, intricate, unison, weaving. Meanings: bubbly = full of happy energy; chain = a connected line or series of people or things; commemorate = to mark or celebrate a special occasion; embark = to begin a journey or start something new (embark on a journey); exuberant = very energetic and excited; fanciful = imaginative, not based on facts; intricate = very complicated or detailed; unison = together, at the same time (they answered in unison); weaving = making cloth by crossing threads over and under each other.20)

الملخص

  • In exercise 1 you listen to a description of the Hajj (recording 1.3) and list the phrases that describe the speaker's personal experience.
  • Personal-experience phrases usually begin with 'I' and contain a feeling, a memory or a comparison.
  • The Hajj is important because it is one of the pillars of Islam and it gathers Muslims from all over the world in equality.
  • 'A sea of white cloth' is a metaphor for the huge crowd of pilgrims in their white ihram clothing.
  • In the writing task you invent a festival for your area and write a report about the preparation, the event and the period after it.
  • The 'Weaving Festival' timetable runs from booking the venue on 23 January to cleaning up on 27 March, with the festival itself on 23–26 March.

الأفكار الرئيسية

  1. A description of a personal experience is built on feelings and images, not only on facts.
  2. 'A sea of white cloth' shows how one short image can carry colour, size and movement together.
  3. A good report follows time order: before the event, during the event, and after the event.

الأسئلة المهمة

Why is the Hajj important?

Because it is one of the five pillars of Islam and a duty on every Muslim who is able to perform it, once in a lifetime. It also gathers Muslims from every country in one place, in the same simple clothes, so it teaches equality, patience and brotherhood.

الكتاب صفحة 20

What does the speaker describe as 'a sea of white cloth', and why is it a good description?

He is describing the enormous crowd of pilgrims, who all wear the simple white clothing of ihram, so from a distance they look like a wide white sea. It is a good description because three words give you the colour, the huge size and the movement of the crowd at the same time.

الكتاب صفحة 20

What kind of phrases should you write in your list in exercise 1?

Phrases that describe the speaker's own personal experience, not facts about the Hajj: expressions such as 'I felt…', 'I had never seen…', 'I will never forget…', 'It was the most … I have ever…', written exactly as the speaker says them.

الكتاب صفحة 20

What must you include in the pair conversation in exercise 3?

One student has just returned from the Hajj and the other is preparing for his journey next year; you share your preparations and experiences, and the book says you must make sure to include some personal descriptions.

الكتاب صفحة 20

What are the three parts of the report you write in exercise 4?

The preparation, the event itself, and the period after the festival. The 'Weaving Festival' timetable shows the same three parts: the jobs from 23 January to 21 March, the festival on 23–26 March, and the clearing up on 27 March.

الكتاب صفحة 20

Give the meaning of 'embark' and 'unison' from the words to remember.

'embark' means to begin a journey or to start something new, as in 'embark on a journey'. 'unison' means together and at the same time, as in 'the pilgrims answered in unison'.

Listen — Exercise 1 (recording 1.3)Listen to a description of the Hajj. Make a list of any phrases the speaker uses to describe his personal experience.20)

Method and model list: write only the phrases that describe how the speaker himself felt, in his own words. Look for expressions such as: 'I will never forget…', 'I had never seen anything like it', 'I felt very small', 'It was the experience of a lifetime', 'I did not expect…', 'a sea of white cloth'. Do not write facts about the Hajj itself, because the task asks for personal experience only. Note: the exact list comes from recording (1.3); the phrase 'a sea of white cloth' is quoted in the book itself in exercise 2c, so it certainly belongs in the list.

Think and speak — Exercise 2Work in pairs. Discuss and answer these questions. a Why is the Hajj important? b Did the speaker predict what his experience would be like? c What does the speaker describe as 'a sea of white cloth'?20)

a The Hajj is important because it is one of the five pillars of Islam and a duty on every Muslim who is able to perform it, once in a lifetime. It gathers Muslims from every country in one place, wearing the same simple clothes, so it teaches equality, patience and brotherhood. b Listen for the language of expectation in the recording: if the speaker says 'I thought it would be…' he did predict it, and if he says 'I never imagined…' or 'nothing prepared me for…' he did not. Quote his sentence as your evidence. c He describes the enormous crowd of pilgrims, who all wear the plain white clothing of ihram, so from a distance the crowd looks like a wide white sea moving together.

Think and speak — Exercise 3 (role play)Work in pairs. Imagine one of you has just returned from the Hajj, and the other is preparing for his journey next year. Share your preparations and experiences with each other. Make sure to include some personal descriptions.20)

Model conversation: A: Welcome back. How was your journey? B: It was the experience of a lifetime. The moment I saw the Kaaba I could not speak. A: What preparations should I make? B: Book early, take light clothes and comfortable sandals, and learn the steps of the Hajj before you travel. A: Was it very crowded? B: Yes — a sea of white cloth in every direction, and thousands of people moving in unison. A: What surprised you most? B: How calm and patient everybody was. Note: the book requires personal descriptions, so each speaker must add feelings and images, not only questions and facts.

Write — Exercise 4 (invent a festival; the 'Weaving Festival' timetable)Work in pairs. Invent a festival or community celebration for your area. It should reflect your area's culture and history and celebrate something that has happened there. One of you should write a report about it, including the preparation, the event itself, and the period after the festival. The other should write from the point of view of a visitor to the festival, outlining where it was successful and where it was not. Use the 'Weaving Festival' timetable as a starting-point to help you. Present your report to the class. Timetable: 23 January book venue; 12 February order weaving materials; 26 February make posters to advertise the festival; 12 March hire tables and chairs; 13 March install the weaving exhibition; 14 March hire local musicians; 20 March confirm all bookings; 21 March prepare the venue and get materials ready; 23–26 March THE FESTIVAL; 27 March clean the venue, thank the musicians, take down the exhibition.20)

Model report (student 1): Our area invented the 'Pearl Divers' Festival' to celebrate the sailors and divers of our coast. Preparation: we booked the old souq as the venue in January, ordered ropes, nets and diving tools in February, and made posters to advertise the festival at the end of February. In March we hired tables and chairs, installed an exhibition of old photographs, hired local musicians to sing traditional sea songs, confirmed all the bookings and prepared the venue. The event: the festival ran for four days with a diving demonstration, traditional food and evening songs. After the festival: we cleaned the venue, thanked the musicians and took down the exhibition. Model visitor's report (student 2): I visited the Pearl Divers' Festival on the second day. It was successful in three ways: the exhibition of old photographs was intricate and beautiful, the musicians were exuberant, and the food was excellent. It was less successful in two ways: there were not enough chairs for the older visitors, and the posters did not give clear directions to the venue, so many people arrived late. Note: follow the timetable's three stages — before, during and after — and use past tenses with dates.
