0 من 3 مكتملListening: three people describing interesting festivals(ص 19)
The book tells you exactly what you are going to hear: **you are going to hear three people describing interesting festivals they have experienced**. Before you listen, exercise 1 asks you to match seven words from the recording with their meanings, and it allows you to use the glossary or a dictionary for help. This is an important listening strategy: know the key words before the recording starts, and you will understand much more.(ص 19)
- Exercise 1 — match the word with its meaning:
- a intricate → 4 very complicated or detailed
- b festivity → 5 the celebration of something in a bubbly and exuberant way
- c commemorate → 6 to mark or celebrate a special occasion
- d buzzing → 7 an atmosphere of excitement
- e Tibetan → 3 someone or something that comes from Tibet
- f fantastic → 2 imaginative or fanciful; extraordinary
- g carnival → 1 a period of public celebration that takes place at a regular time each year
Listening again: True or False, and justify your answers(ص 19)
Exercise 2 says: listen again; are these statements True (T) or False (F)? **Justify your answers.** 'Justify' means you must write the reason on the line under the statement, not only tick the box. If the statement is False, write the correct information; if it is True, write the words from the recording that prove it. In the exam you lose the mark when you tick correctly but leave the justification line empty.(ص 19)
- The six statements in the book:
- Speaker 1 — a National Day is celebrated annually on the 26th of February.
- Speaker 1 — b The speaker normally spends the day with their family.
- Speaker 2 — c The small decorated vehicle is called a 'float'.
- Speaker 2 — d People come from all over the world to see the festival.
- Speaker 3 — e Sand pictures are made for children to keep as souvenirs.
- Speaker 3 — f Losar is a religious festival.
Think and speak: discussing festivals(ص 19)
In exercise 3 you discuss five questions in pairs or groups: (a) What festivals do people celebrate in Kuwait? (b) What happens and how many people attend? (c) How do festivals that have been founded in the last century differ from more traditional celebrations? (d) Festivals are a celebration of our relationship with the world we live in — do you agree or disagree? (e) How can festivals benefit society?(ص 19)
For question (a) use the festivals of this unit: the **Hala February Festival**, the **Qurain Cultural Festival**, **National Day** on 25th February and **Liberation Day** on 26th February. For question (b), say what happens at each one: at Hala February there are cultural celebrations, carnivals, raffles, contests and huge shop discounts, and it attracts many tourists, especially families from the Gulf; at Qurain there are concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, seminars and awards, and guests come from outside Kuwait every year.(ص 19)
For question (c), compare a modern festival with a traditional celebration. A modern festival such as Hala February was launched in 1999, it is organised by companies and official bodies, it is advertised, and it has an economic side (shopping, tourism). A traditional celebration is older, it grows out of religion or the seasons, it is centred on the family and the neighbourhood, and it needs no organiser or advertisement.(ص 19)
For question (d) you may agree or disagree, but you must give a reason. A model 'agree' answer: festivals really do celebrate our relationship with the world, because Hala February celebrates the arrival of spring, when the desert changes from scorched sands to a green canopy of flowers and migratory birds arrive. A model 'disagree' answer: many festivals celebrate people and history rather than nature, for example Liberation Day and the Qurain awards for artists.(ص 19)

Listening — Exercise 1 (match the words, recording 1.2)You are going to hear three people describing interesting festivals they have experienced. Match these words from the recording with their meanings. You may use the glossary / dictionary for help. a intricate b festivity c commemorate d buzzing e Tibetan f fantastic g carnival 1 a period of public celebration that takes place at a regular time each year 2 imaginative or fanciful; extraordinary 3 someone or something that comes from Tibet 4 very complicated or detailed 5 the celebration of something in a bubbly and exuberant way 6 to mark or celebrate a special occasion 7 an atmosphere of excitement(ص 19)
a–4, b–5, c–6, d–7, e–3, f–2, g–1. Note: 'fantastic' here keeps its original meaning (imaginative, extraordinary) and not the everyday meaning 'very good'; 'buzzing' describes an atmosphere, not a sound made by insects.
Listening — Exercise 2 (True or False, justify, recording 1.2)Listen again. Are these statements True (T) or False (F)? Justify your answers. Speaker 1: a National Day is celebrated annually on the 26th of February. b The speaker normally spends the day with their family. Speaker 2: c The small decorated vehicle is called a 'float'. d People come from all over the world to see the festival. Speaker 3: e Sand pictures are made for children to keep as souvenirs. f Losar is a religious festival.(ص 19)
a False — National Day is celebrated on 25th February; the 26th of February is Liberation Day (see the reading text of this unit). b, c, d, e, f — take the answer from recording (1.2): listen for the key word in each statement (family, float, all over the world, souvenirs, religious), then write the speaker's own words on the justification line. If the statement is false, write the correct information from the recording instead. Note: the mark is given for the justification, not only for the tick, so never leave the line empty.
Think and speak — Exercise 3 (discussion)Discuss these questions in pairs or groups. a What festivals do people celebrate in Kuwait? b What happens and how many people attend? c How do festivals that have been founded in the last century differ from more traditional celebrations? d Festivals are a celebration of our relationship with the world we live in. Do you agree or disagree? e How can festivals benefit society?(ص 19)
a National Day (25th February), Liberation Day (26th February), the Hala February Festival and the Qurain Cultural Festival. b At Hala February there are cultural celebrations, carnivals, raffles, contests and huge shop discounts, and it attracts a very large number of visitors including tourists and families from the Gulf; at Qurain there are concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and seminars, with guests from outside Kuwait, and participation is free. c Festivals founded in the last century, like Hala February (launched in 1999), are organised by companies and official bodies, are advertised, and have an economic and tourist side; traditional celebrations are older, grow out of religion, the seasons and family life, and need no organiser. d Open answer with a reason. Agree: Hala February celebrates the arrival of spring, when the desert turns from scorched sands to a green canopy of flowers. Disagree: many festivals celebrate people and history, such as Liberation Day and the Qurain awards. e They spread joy, happiness and delight; they inspire a sense of patriotism; they help the economy through shopping and tourism; and they nurture culture by honouring artists and giving young writers and composers a platform. Note: the texts do not give exact attendance figures, so answer question b in general terms.
